September 2018 Minutes

LAKE OF THE OZARKS
AMATEUR RADIO CLUB MINUTES
September 12, 2018

The meeting was called to order by Larry Cicchinelli (K3PTO) at 7:00 p.m.  Introductions followed: There were 15 members present and 2 visitors.

The August, 2018 minutes had been sent out via email and were approved.  The financial report was also approved.

Standing committee reports:

  • REPEATER: Gary (N0RIJ) said everything is working well. Jerry Parmer (KE0OTM) is taking training on the repeater and how to maintain it.
  • EMRGENCY NET: Ernie Venis (WØLTC ) said that he had 11 check-ins on our repeater and 8 check-ins on the 955 repeater, including one mobile from Warsaw in Benton County.

Mark your calendars for the emergency drill at 10:00 a.m. and club meeting on October 10, 2018.

  •  TRAILER COMMITTEE: Jerry said that Fred was going to put the trailer in, but he was not certain that it was actually done.  We’ll have to ask Fred.
  • TESTING LIAISON: There was no one for testing.
  • WEB PAGE: Jack McGuire (KDØQEB) said. Web page is updated for monthly meeting minutes and Eatin’ Meetin’ announcements.  Several people said that there is an ongoing problem with the drop-down menus will not stay down.  We know but don’t know what is causing it.  This varies depending on the computer, the browser, the cell phone and the weather?  Maybe sun spots?
  • WRECKING CREW: Jack McGuire reported that he and Glenn had gone to Dan Cook’s “tree house” to assess the feasibility of our helping put up a Gap Eagle vertical antenna on top of a tower to the house.  There is a mast already in the tower that was been bent during a wind storm that has to be removed before the new antenna can be mounted.  It is quite high, and both of them determined that it was too dangerous for us to attempt.
  • 2 METER NET:
    • October Net Control:  Gary Welsh (N0RIJ), the first Saturday
      • Glenn Commons (K0KER) middle weeks and Larry Cicchinelli (K3PTO) the last Saturday
    • November Net Control: Jack McGuire
    • December Net Control:
  • 10 METER NET: Four (4) total last night and five (5) the week before.  Larry (net control) asked for more people to check in to the net.  Some people have had problems hearing those on the net, and several said that they are using vertically polarized antennas.
  • ECHOLINK: Jerry said that he has had to reboot after a storm, but other than that, there are apparently no issues.
  • OLD BUSINESS: None
  • NEW BUSINESS:
    • Tom reported that the Joplin Hamfest was good, but parking was so bad that they had shuttles to get people to and from the parking lot.
    • Glenn said that he is recently in possession of two boxes of instructional videos, code tapes and cassette tapes and will bring them to the next club meeting to ask that someone take them.  If no one wants them, they will be going to the junk yard.
    • Jack said that he is a relatively new ham and wants to know what others want to learn, i.e. topics that we can use as presentations at our meetings.  Please contact Jack with your ideas.  Tom (WA0OFO) said that he has some DVDs on various ham topics that can be shown at meetings.  Jack said that he would like to get the topic ideas and prepare the presentations himself or find someone qualified to present them live so that we can have interaction.  He even said that we might do the presentations at other selected locations, not necessarily at a meeting.  Tom Sterling said that he would appreciate a presentation on antennas in May, 2019.  Larry said that basic electronics or computer programming could also be topics if others are interested.
    • Ron Swinney (said that he has a FT-1000 available for free.  Frank Galinski jumped on the offer like a duck on a June Bug.
    • Larry said that we need a nominating committee to get nominees for our upcoming office election.  Those shanghaied onto the committee were Fred Groce (W0FG) (who wasn’t there) Jimmy Schapiro (KD0FPC), and Gary Welsh.
    • Larry said that the Johnson County ECO sent a letter saying that there is a person at the Climax Springs school who wants someone to contact him about the ham equipment at the school.  Someone (I didn’t get the name) who said they would take the letter and contact the person.  Larry asked that he get back to him with the information so, once we understand the request,  we can decide how to handle it.
  • Sickness and Injuries: Jimmy said that the rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated.
  • Ham Equipment for sale or swap: Check the website: loarc.com
    • Our procedure for allowing anyone to list equipment is in place.  Please download    the equipment for sale submission form, fill it out and email it back to Jack McGuire per instructions on the website.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:45 p.m.

Respectively submitted,
Glenn Commons (KØKER)
Secretary/Treasurer
